Most "AI" in dating apps means one of two things: a recommendation algorithm that surfaces profiles based on who you've swiped right on before, or a demographic filter that matches people with similar age, location, and education. Neither of those is actually interesting.

The problem with keyword matching

Early attempts at "smart" matching used keyword overlap. Both of you like hiking? Match. Both list "travel" as an interest? Match. The problem is that surface-level keyword overlap doesn't predict compatibility — it predicts that you'd have one easy conversation topic.

Two people can both write "I love deep conversations" and be completely incompatible. One means philosophical debates about meaning; the other means emotional vulnerability about relationships. Keywords don't capture this difference. The way you write about something does.

What Tangle's AI actually reads

When you join Tangle, you share four things that feed the matching algorithm:

Your intent — serious relationship, casual connection, healing after a breakup, or exploring. This is the hardest filter: Tangle won't match people with fundamentally incompatible intents.
Your bio — not a template, your actual words about who you are right now.
Your interests — what you actually spend time on, not what sounds good.
Your conversation starter — a question or topic you'd actually want to talk about. This reveals how you think and what you find interesting.

The AI processes the semantic meaning of your writing — the values implicit in how you describe yourself, the priorities reflected in what you choose to mention, the depth of self-awareness in your words. It's looking for resonance, not overlap.

How a match is generated

Step 1

Intent alignment

Before any AI analysis, Tangle filters for compatible intent. Someone looking for a serious relationship won't be matched with someone explicitly looking for something casual. This one filter eliminates the most common source of dating app frustration.

Step 2

Story analysis

The AI reads both profiles together — not separately. It's looking for the places where your stories could connect: shared underlying values, complementary ways of seeing things, or a depth of self-reflection that suggests you'd be on the same level.

Step 3

Match reason generation

For every suggested match, Tangle generates a specific, personalised reason why you two could connect. Not "you both like coffee" — something substantive about the compatibility the AI detected. This reason is shown to both people.

Step 4

Mutual interest required

You see the match and the reason. You can express interest. If it's mutual, a conversation opens. If not, nothing happens — no awkward rejections, no unsolicited messages.

What the AI doesn't do

A few things worth being clear about:

The AI doesn't rank you by attractiveness or engagement metrics
It doesn't penalise you for being selective or not swiping enough
It doesn't show you more matches if you pay — the matching algorithm isn't monetised that way
It doesn't use your conversation data to retarget you with ads

Why this matters for real connection

When you know why you've been matched with someone, the first conversation has a different quality. You're not starting from "so what do you do?" — you're starting from a shared context that the AI identified. That leads to faster, deeper, more honest early conversations.
